Interview with Steven Wolk
Where do you get your inspiration?
My art comes from my inner soul. With a brush in my hand, I look at an empty canvas, put brush to paper and the images start to flow. It’s hard to explain but the colours and images just take shape before my eyes. It’s like I have something or someone guiding my hand. To me, the language of colour is music. It’s the emotions evoked by the music that come through the canvas.
You seem so animated when discussing your art. Why is this?
Aside from my family, my art is my passion. I take pleasure in speaking with art lovers and my excitement and enthusiasm seem to overpower me. Sometimes I feel like I talk too much, but I can’t seem to help it. You will frequently hear me say “When you love what you do, it shows!”
Everywhere you show a crowd surrounds you. You often say that you are shy, but this is not apparent to those of us who listen to and admire you.
People often ask me to teach but it is difficult to teach a feeling. I always tell people to have fun with art. A person should not worry about the end result. Splash! Get Dirty! Enjoy the moment! Your artistic expression is the only thing that truly belongs to you alone and it doesn’t matter what others think as long as you enjoy what you are doing.
